What is a Molar Pregnancy?

A molar pregnancy or hydatidiform mole is a form of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) when abnormally growing tissue develops within the uterus rather than a normal embryo.

It occurs when there is an error in the process of fertilization, resulting in the development of an abnormal placenta made up of enlarged, filled-with-fluid cysts that are grape-like. This tissue is not able to form a healthy baby and has to be excised to avoid complications.

There are two primary forms of molar pregnancy:

1. Complete Molar Pregnancy –

Normal fetal tissue does not form.
The uterus becomes filled with abnormal placental tissue.
Results from fertilizing an unfertilized egg by one or two sperm.

2. Partial Molar Pregnancy –

There is some normal fetal tissue, but it is abnormal and not viable.
Results from two sperm fertilizing a normal egg, resulting in a notched set of chromosomes.

Both conditions need to be diagnosed and treated immediately to avoid the progression to more severe forms of gestational trophoblastic disease.

Symptoms of a Molar Pregnancy

Early symptoms of molar pregnancy can mimic normal pregnancy symptoms, which is the reason that it is frequently found by routine prenatal scans. Yet some symptoms can indicate the diagnosis of a molar pregnancy:

. Abnormal bleeding of the vagina (usually dark brown or bright red in color)
. Severe nausea and vomiting
. Increased uterine growth (greater than for gestational age)
. Extreme abdominal pain or cramping
. Lack of fetal heartbeat
. Grape-like cysts passing through the vagina
. High blood pressure or preeclampsia symptoms in early pregnancy

If you have any of these symptoms, immediately consult a doctor. Prompt diagnosis and treatment from UMA Medical Related Institute can ensure full recovery and future fertility.

Complications of Molar Pregnancy

Untreated or not well-managed, a molar pregnancy can develop serious health issues, including:

. Persistent trophoblastic disease (PTD) – Pathological cells continue to develop after the mole removal.
. Choriocarcinoma – A rare form of cancer that can develop from molar tissue.
. Severe internal bleeding or infection.
. Infertility (if complications are not managed early).

At UMA Medical Related Institute, our experts ensure early intervention and continuous monitoring to prevent such complications and safeguard your long-term reproductive health.

Future Fertility After Molar Pregnancy

Most women who have had a molar pregnancy go on to have normal pregnancies later. With proper treatment and follow-up care, fertility is usually unaffected.

Our gynecologists recommend:

. Waiting at least 6–12 months before trying to conceive again.
. Getting early ultrasound scans in the next pregnancy to ensure it’s normal.
. Regular consultations for pre-pregnancy planning and prenatal care.

At UMA Medical Related Institute, we care for women during their recovery and subsequent conception with personalized reproductive health care.

Preventing Molar Pregnancy

While it’s not always possible to prevent molar pregnancy, certain measures can reduce the risk:

. Maintain good reproductive health and nutrition.
. Get early prenatal checkups after every conception.
. Treat any uterine infections promptly.
. Discuss previous molar pregnancy history with your doctor before trying to conceive again.

Our gynaecologists provide preconception counseling to determine risk factors and have a successful pregnancy course.
